NATURAL Saddles & Schlappens Strung
Strung rooster saddle hackle is thin stemmed and very flexible with lots of movement, and generous amounts of fluff at the base. They come from the back or "saddle" of a mature rooster. This feather is known as saddle hackle by fly tyers and specially bred birds at a few specialty growers around the USA (like Whiting, Metz, Keough) produce a very long, thin saddle feather that became quite a fad as hair feathers. Saddle hackle is generally strung or sewn and is sold by the measured segment.
Schlappen is a type of rooster feather located at the base of the tail. The feathers are soft and flexible but wider and denser than saddle. The stem is thinner than coque. Like the closely related strung saddle hackle it is a basic feather for fashion, costume, mask, fly tying and millinery applications. Schlappen and saddle are generally strung or sewn and sold by the measured segment. There are numerous natural shades as well as dyed colors over white or other natural variations.
